Microsoft is fixing a few issues with the tablet taskbar and more in Dev Build 25217.

Microsoft has released a new build of Windows 11 Insider 25217 to the Dev Channel. This is still version 22H2 as Sun Valley 3 development, known as Windows 11 23H2, has apparently been canceled in favor of releasing a major new version of Windows every three years. So for now, the Dev Channel is sticking with version 22H2, which could come out sometime in 2023.

In the build, Microsoft fixed a few tablet-optimized taskbar bugs, although some of them still remain open. The full list of changes is below:

What news

Developers can start creating third-party widgets

We are pleased to announce support for third party widgets as part of the WinAppSDK 1.2 Preview 2 release . Our team has been hard at work extending the widget board, first introduced in Windows 11, to more developers. The Third Party Widget Framework included with this release will allow developers to create widgets for their packaged Win32 apps and test them locally on the Windows 11 Widget Board.

New features:

  • Developers with packaged Win32 applications will be able to create and test third-party widgets locally if their computer is in developer mode in Settings > Privacy & Security > Developer Options . Developers will also need the latest Insider Preview build from the Dev Channel to get the required widget board update (version 521.20060.1205.0 or higher). For more information about widgets, including prerequisites, see the Widget Design Documentation and the Widget Development Documentation.

Known limitations:

  • Third party widgets can only be tested locally in the latest Insider Preview builds from the Dev channel for this preview release. With the release of WinAppSDK 1.2 GA, users of released versions of Windows 11 can begin purchasing third-party widgets through the Microsoft Store for shipping versions of their app.
  • Support for third-party PWA widgets will also be coming in a future release of Microsoft Edge.

Cloud offer in Simplified Chinese IME

We are testing some changes that will allow you to easily type fresh, trending and popular words in Simplified Chinese. Changes include an improved cloud offering and a built-in search offer. The cloud suggestion adds the most relevant word from Bing to the candidate IME window. We have updated the internal logic so that we can provide better and fresher offers.

The integrated search suggestion gives you additional suggestions similar to what you see on the Bing search page. You can paste the suggestion as text or search for it directly in Bing.

[We’re starting to roll out this feature, so it’s not yet available to all Insiders as we plan to track feedback and see how it works before rolling it out to everyone.]

FEEDBACK: Send feedback to the Feedback Hub (WIN + F) in Input & Language > Typing.

Here are the changes and improvements in Build 25217:

[Entrance]

  • We started rolling out the new Tamil Anjal Tamil Keyboard with Build 25179 and it’s available to all Windows Insiders on the Dev channel starting today. To add it, make sure Tamil (Singapore), Tamil (Malaysia), Tamil (Sri Lanka), or Tamil (India) is listed in Settings > Time & Language > Language & Region , then tap “…” next to Language, select Language Options and add Tamil Anjal (QWERTY) to the list of keyboards.
  • For now, we’ve disabled the new touch keyboard setting that first began rolling out to Windows Insiders in Build 25188 . We hope to bring this feature back in the future with further design refinements. As we mentioned earlier , the features we test in the development and beta channels may not always ship.

Here are all the bug fixes:

[Dashboard optimized for tablets]

NOTE. These fixes will only appear if your device has the tablet-optimized taskbar enabled (documented here). The tablet-optimized taskbar is still rolling out to Windows Insiders and is not yet available to everyone.

  • We fixed an issue that sometimes caused the taskbar to collapse when it needed to be maximized if there were no windows running on the desktop.
  • We fixed an issue that occurred when using left or right edge gestures that caused widgets or the Action Center (respectively) to overlap with the taskbar or appear truncated.
  • We fixed an issue where the tablet-optimized taskbar was causing explorer.exe to crash when switching apps.
  • We fixed an issue that caused the taskbar optimized for tablets to crash explorer.exe if you opened the overflow popup menu.

[Windowed Mode]

  • Fixed an issue that caused the close button for window preview thumbnails in Task View to appear slightly outside of the thumbnail.
  • We fixed an issue where when switching between windows in recent builds, you might see the entire window flashing black for a frame while rendering.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in Miracast video quality being very slow and freezing in recent builds despite a stable internet connection.

[System tray updates]

NOTE. These fixes will only show up if system tray updates (documented here) are enabled on your device. The tablet-optimized taskbar is still rolling out to Windows Insiders and is not yet available to everyone.

  • Fixed an issue where quick settings items could now be rearranged by tapping again.

[Settings]

  • We fixed an issue in Network & Internet > Advanced network settings that caused some networks to display incorrect connection speeds.

[Another]

  • Fixed an issue where Remote Desktop on an ARM64 PC would unexpectedly not use UDP but only TCP.

NOTE. Some of the fixes noted here in Insider Preview builds from the Dev channel may make it into service updates for the released version of Windows 11.

And finally, we have known issues:

[General]

  • We’re investigating reports that audio has stopped working for some Insiders after updating to the latest builds.
  • We’re investigating reports that several different apps have started to crash in recent builds.
  • We are investigating reports that various UI elements in apps sometimes disappear and reappear in recent builds.

[Dashboard optimized for tablets]

  • The taskbar sometimes flickers when transitioning between the desktop position and the tablet position.
  • The taskbar takes longer than expected to switch to the touch version when switching between desktop position and tablet position.
  • When using the bottom right edge gesture to view quick settings, the taskbar sometimes remains in an expanded state instead of closing in a minimized state.

[Widgets]

  • In right-to-left languages such as Arabic, the content animates out of view before the widget board resizes when you click on the extended view of the widget board.
  • The notification icon number may appear misaligned on the taskbar.
